CIVAN: Welding Without Distortion? It’s Now Possible

30 May 2025

When welding, distortion is caused by uncontrolled thermal expansion and contraction of the medium. Welders typically rely on techniques such as skip welding, backstrap welding and tightly clamping parts to minimise distortion, but Civan’s Dynamic Beam Lasers (DBL) offer a fundamentally different way to weld thick sections. The precise control of a Dynamic Beam Laser allows the precise targeting to create a small fusion zone deep within the joint without overheating the surrounding area. This significantly reduces the amount of thermal expansion and contraction and thus the distortion created by the welding process.

In a recent demonstration, a 25mm thick stainless steel (SS316) plate was welded with only a single pass. Despite the plate only being held in place by simple tack welds and no clamps or jigs, there was no measurable distortion in the final part or post-weld straightening required. Results like these show that DBL can simplify assembly, reduce setup time and ensure higher quality, even on challenging applications.
